You've been diagnosed with ADHD. What now?
Firstly, different specialists can play a part in managing the
condition. These include:
- Your doctor
- Psychiatrists
- Speech and language
therapists.
Treating ADHD usually
involves behavioural therapy, medication, or a combination of
both.
Sometimes a GP and the specialist involved ‘share care’. In this
situation, the specialist will decide treatment and medication,
if appropriate. Your GP will then prescribe the medication,
monitor its effects and liaise regularly with the specialist.
The more involved you are with the decisions made about your
treatment, the more likely you’ll be happy with them. Remember,
good healthcare professionals should make it clear to you what’s
happening – avoiding confusing words or complicated technical
descriptions. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t
understand something.
Once a suitable way of treating you has been worked out, your
emotional, social and academic development may begin to improve.
